Home Decor – Picking Paint Color Part I

One of the easiest ways to change the entire look of a room is to paint it or change the current paint color. Most people leave their walls white, because they have no idea what color they want to use in a room or which walls they should paint. There are so many different ways to apply paint to a room. You can paint this wall but not that one. Paint this wall a light color and that one a dark color. Paint all the walls dark and use white for the trim. Maybe you want to paint the ceiling. There are a lot of decisions to make. When it comes to paint you don’t have to know exactly what you want to do until you know what color(s) you want in a room. What walls or ceiling you paint depends entirely upon the mood you want for that room, and if you have a dark color or a light color.

The first thing to think about when picking a paint color is to choose what room you are going to start decorating. Starting with a smaller room is a good idea just in case you don’t like the results. If you don’t, you can always start over. Bathrooms are usually a good place to start because of their size. Applying new home decor to any room where you are changing the entire look, can get expensive if you choose a room that is too big. Focus on one of the smaller rooms in your home when just getting started.

The second thing to think about when picking paint color is to determine the mood you want to set for that room. What room are you planning to decorate? The bathroom, kitchen, or bedroom. How do you want to feel when you walk into the room. Do you want a soothing and relaxing room to go to when you’re tired or stressed out? Do you want a bright and bold room with a lot of pizzazz What type of feeling do you want portrayed inside the room? If you already have decorations and don’t want to replace them, you will need to choose a color that compliments the current home decor. If you are planning to replace everything and can start over fresh, you can choose a color you like or one that portrays the mood you are looking for.…

Kitchen Colors That Work For You

A kitchen can be a fun room to decorate. You probably spend a lot of time in the kitchen so why not give it a little of your personality? Adding to your walls, counter-tops, floor and cabinets can make your kitchen an infinitely more enjoyable place to work. You can use a color scheme in your kitchen to really define the look and feel of your space, so go ahead and make it your own.

Modern Vibe – There is something a little wonderful about working in a kitchen that you love. You can create energy in your kitchen by bringing in colors like cobalt blue or a bright, sunny yellow. You may choose to saturate your appliances with color, or you may choose to leave them neutral, so that you can easily change your color scheme around them.

Warm and Wonderful – If you enjoy nothing more than entertaining in your kitchen, why not set it aglow with warm earth tones. This color palette creates an inviting and comfortable atmosphere throughout your space that is sure to make your guests feel right at home.

Laid Back – You can create a wonderful casual feel in your kitchen so that anyone who enters will enjoy the space. Green is a soothing color, and it will work well to create balance in your kitchen. It is also an organic color, so it works well when you combine it with an environment filled with food. Add some yellow accents and your kitchen will simply be delicious.

Industrial Lines – If you like a clean and clear space to work in, then you may prefer a more industrial vibe for your kitchen space. Stainless steel and white make a kitchen that exudes cleanliness, and it provides a great backdrop for any accessories or focal point that you want to display.

Romantic Response – If you would much rather cook your romantic dinner at home than go out to a restaurant, then this is the look for you. Use warm wood tones and dark colors to give your kitchen a rich and luxurious feel. As you light your candles to enjoy your romantic dinner the dark tones of the room will highlight the romance of the candle's glow.

As you are designing your perfect kitchen there are a few things that you want to keep in mind.

Continuity – Even when you are using color to create a strong mood in your kitchen, you will want to connect it to the rest of your home's decor to keep it feeling cohesive. One of the easiest ways to do this is to pull a color from an adjoining room and include it in your kitchen.

Coordinate – While counter-tops and flooring are pretty permanent fixtures in your home, you can use wall color to link your room to the rest of the house and to make it feel balanced. For example, if you have a granite counter-top, you can choose a color from the granite …

Is an Interior Design Career Right For Me? – And Where Do I Start?

"How do I get into Interior Design?" There's no one-size-fits-all answer (thankfully!). Few careers require such a unique blend of artistic and technical skills, but Interior Design comes in enough flavors to suit diversity skill sets and personalities.

In General, the profession falls into two distinct categories: Interior Decorating and Interior Design. They are both completely viable avenues and there are many professionals with successful careers in each.

"Interior Decorating" : If you prefer residential interiors, and enjoy focusing on furnishings and decor rather than space planning and codes, there are many satisfying and profitable options to explore and Interior Decorating may be your perfect fit. Image is not Required, (but you need to be aware of the laws regulating the practice of ID in your state). Some great options: Decorating for individual home owners, home staging, interior re-design, working within a design / decorating firm or on your own, working for or with builders preparing model homes, or apartment / condo / townhome leasing companies to name a few.

So how do I get there ?? – As with anything, the key to your success will be your motivation and commitment! The more you are willing to put in the more you will achieve. The most straight forward way to start is to take classes at a university or community college, but if you are not in a position to go to school right now, there are still some very practical steps you can take. The Hardest Part is Just Getting Started – SO …… GET STARTED !!! There are many paths, but here's a suggested 6-step Action Plan to get you going:

  1. Self-Study – not an online degree (Avoid those completely for Interior Design), but rather to use the available free and low cost resources in a focused, disciplined, and intentional way in order to familiarize yourself with design concepts and to develop practical skills . These resources will not, of course, replace a university degree … but they will help you to explore real issues and topics which designers face on a daily basis (not the 'fluff' seen on TV and in magazines). Some of these skills can legitimately be included on a resume as you seek entry-level design jobs in order to set yourself apart. This is a great first step for those anxious to get started towards their dream, but who can not yet leave an existing job … or for an at-home parent to learn skills on your own schedule … Some examples of free study options are: learn 3d modeling and rendering with Google Sketch-up; learn AutoCad basics – get a starter book, even buy it used, then download a 30 day Acad trial; There are some well done free CEU opportunities aimed at Architects and Designers, but you do not have to be a professional to take them …
  2. Read – Read anything that catches your interest incorporating design. This can be library books, grocery store magazines, websites, etc … Fluff is

Make Your Own Rustic Decor Using Old Fihsihg Gear

Decorating with old, used fishing gear is fun, creative and pretty inexpensive as well. It's real easy to find unique fishing gear to use as decorating items. Here are a few ideas for your fishing decor projects.

First you will need to find some old fishing gear. Garage sales are great for purchasing used fishing equipment for your projects. Keep an eye out for used nets, poles, lures, bobbers, stringers and other Items. You can even walk the shores of your favorite lake as you will be surprised what fishermen leave behind. You will also get a great workout and a nice hike while hunting old gear on the shores, pack a lunch and make a day out of it.

Once you find the gear you would like to use be sure to clean everything very carefully and thoroughly. In the past I have used such items to clean my finds, alcohol for lures (be sure to snip the hook point off), bleach for nets (hand soak them). Of course you can us the age old 3 and 1 vinegar solution to remove any fish smell that may still be attached to your item; After all you do not want that smell in your home.

The types of decorating you can do with your items are endless. This is where the fun and imagination kicks in. These are just a few ideas to help get you started on your rustic fishing décor items. Old bait buckets make great containers. You can use them in bathrooms by rolling up some hand towels for the inside, dried flowers, or by placing bath products in them. These buckets also work great in such places as the kitchen for napkins, flower arrangements or in bed rooms for all those loose things lying around the dresser. Do not forget they are perfect for the change change as well.

Old fishing poles from garage sales are pretty cheap and make great curtain rods or wall decor. If using them as curtain rods, be sure to remove the thread loops that the fishing line enteres; Place your rings on the rod and then your drapes. This will really make for a great conversation piece. Wall décor is always fun with old rods. By placing two in an X shape on any wall with an old fishing net, fishing hat or a shelf or maybe by an old fishing shadow box, this will bring the great outdoors into your home or cabin.

Shadow boxes are a perfect asset to any rustic décor. I have used old wood that I had lying around in the garage. Construct your box and place an old fishing photo, some old lures, an old bait jar, rusted fishing waits, etc. Hang it on the wall to show your creative side.

Other things I have tried with old fishing items are. I have placed old nets wrapped in drift wood to place them on walls, I have taken old fishing bobbers and used them …

Daly Waters, Northern Australia – Home Of The World's Most Remote Traffic Light!

Daly Waters is seven kilometers off the Stuart Highway, 275 km south of Katherine. If waiting for red lights is not for you, it would be best to avoid Daly Waters (the light never changes).

We've all been there – trapped at a red light for seemingly decades for no apparent reason, tapping on the steering wheel in an increasing frenzy of impatience.

Outside this famous pub is the world's most remote set of traffic lights, there is probably another traffic light for 300 miles! Of course in this little town of 21 people there is not a whole lot of traffic either.

The airstrip here was Australia's original international terminal, used as a stop-off in the London to Sydney air race in 1926. After Darwin was attacked by the Japanese, all major air operations were moved to Daly Waters. The original Qantas hanger still exists, as well as the oil store and barracks for the troops, suffice to say, this was not aought after assignment.

Nowadays, the town is most famous for it's pub, which is unique even by Australian standards. The wall decor can only be described as unusual ranging from business cards, postcards, foreign currency, passports, underwear, etc.

As is the usual custom in these parts, if a lady looses a game of pool, she has to remove her underwear and hang it on the wall.

Hours could be sent just browsing and viewing all the graffiti on the wall and deciphering where it all came from.

But away from the odd aviation geek, people do not stop in Daly Waters for a mosey around a deserted airfield. No, they stop because the traffic light told them to do so or because they've been driving all day and they're hankering after a lovely cold beer.

Evenings are when the Daly Waters pub really comes into its own. That's when the big barbie comes out and the new-fangled fad of vegetarianism is merclysly shunned. Salad is what food eats in this neck of the woods, although there will be a sprinkling of it available. Frankly, you do not need lettuce when the steaks are top quality and the barramundi fresh out of the river. Once you've tasted it, you will not really care too much about the traffic. …

Why Hire An Interior Designer?

With the rising popularity of home-related style, design and do-it-yourself shows on television, many creative homeowners have a new appreciation of how interior design can make a dramatic difference in the appearance and functionality of their homes. Although many of these shows make big projects look fast and easy, savvy homeowners know there is a lot of planning, skill and effort that goes on behind the scenes.

There is a worthy value in hiring a professional interior designer when you are contemplating a home redesign or decorating project. Although many of us are capable of doing competent design work, an interior designer will take your project to the next level. They are likely to come up with ideas that you never thought of, save you from costly or silly mistakes, and better integrate the changes with the overall character and layout of your home. A good designer will see the big picture aspect of the process while still understanding all of the little details that are equally important.

A locally based interior design consultant will have working knowledge and understanding of the design styles that are appropriate for the area in which you live.

For example, someone in Florida may want to consider styles such as Key West, Mediterranean or Contemporary, although there are certainly many other options.

If you like having a relaxed, island vibe to your home, a Key West design style could be an appropriate choice. It often features colorful, tropical fabrics, rattan or wicker furniture and even pine wood interior walls. Key West houses usually have some unique and artistic details.

For a Mediterranean feel, your designer might use earth and water-inspired colors, ceramic or stone tile, sturdy wood or fabric furniture and light, breezy drapes. The Mediterranean home will be comfortable and practical.

A Contemporary design style may be more appropriate if you like a formal look with clean lines and bold statements. The Contemporary home will have fewer frilly or ornament accessories in order to create a minimalist, uncluttered feel. Works of art may serve as focal points within each room, or individual pieces of furniture may be featured.

In Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, on the other hand, families may feel at home in a South Western style decor. Every place is different, and who better to understand those differences than someone who works with them day in and day out. That being considered, you may be inspired by a decor that has nothing to do with the area in which you live. You may live in Minnesota and be in love with an African themed home or have no theme in mind, but love a certain color. Consult with your designer for great ideas on any theme.

It is important that your interior design style works well with the architecture of your house. Your interior design consultant can help integrate the interior and exterior design of your home so that it seamlessly blends together. Careful selection of materials, color, furnishings and accents …

Want to Instantly Spruce Up Your Room? Try a Mirror!

Typically used in interior decoration to create an illusion of space, the modern day mirror has its origins dated as far back as 6000BC when man most likely used pools of dark, still water, or water collected in primitive vessels to create the reflections we now take very much for granted. In contemporary art, the softness of old mirrors is sometimes replicated for use in interior design. Reproduction antiqued mirrors can bring color and texture to an otherwise hard, cold reflective surface. It is an artistic process that has been attempted by many and perfected by few, however, to the end user mirrors are somehow the easiest way to bring to life, not to mention a fresh sense of class, sophistication and drama to any room in today's modern home.

A shining example of emphasis on style put to the test, or as the case may be, demonstrated by bronze mosaic wall mirrors make up an array of wall mirror designs that range from the grace and opulence of oval mirrors, to the vanity style mirror that is traditionally a popular addition of choice for dressing areas, make-up tables or bathroom counters. It is therefore not uncommon for contemporary artists to use mirrors as the material of art, like in mirror-sculptures and paintings on mirror surfaces. Some would even build special mirror installations such as neon cubes just to enhance their reflection.
