Event Decor Committee – What Are My Duties?

Event decorating for adults is a bit different than a typical children’s birthday party. Sure, you can decide on a theme and then search the Internet to see what’s available but 9 times out of 10, your search results are going to be geared towards children’s parties.

Some decorations can be adapted for use with either but I do not recommend decorating a grown up gala event with toilet paper and a few balloons. It will give your guests the impression that you did not care enough to plan and execute a decorating scheme. And, with a fund-raising event, this can be detrimental. You are asking guests to spend a lot of money to attend this event (babysitters, ticket prices, buy auction items, attire of the event, etc…). They want to be entertained, amused and feel they are important.

The other end of the spectrum is hiring an event planning service or having unlimited funds at your disposal. Neither of these options may suit your budget. If not, then it’s time to visit the “in-between” option.

Most events have a general committee made up of the Event Chairperson and sub-committee chairpersons. Decor is usually a sub-committee that deals with the decor planning for an event. This may include any number of areas within the event (room, table, buffet, auction tables, entrances, etc…) and I recommend it does cover all these areas and any other where any type of decor will be needed.

This will make it easier to keep track of the decorating budget and who’s responsible for what. I also recommend that the Decor Chairperson work closely with other committees that will also use the chosen “Theme”. It is necessary to have cohesion, a sense of continuity when a theme is involved.

For example, say you decided as a committee your theme will be “Ancient Egypt” and your color scheme will be gold, purple and teal. Great!

Now at a full meeting of all committees, you learn that the “Print/ Marketing” committee has decided to use a red font and a Fleur-de-leis on the invitation. Huh? Uh-oh: major “one hand does not know what the other hand is doing” scenario.

This can and should be nipped in the bud. A theme/mood and colors should be decided right from the start so that all committees are working toward the same end.

Duties could include the following (and anything else unique to your event).

• Secure volunteers for your committee. (Remember to use anyone with a background, knowledge or contacts that could be useful to the decorating committee.

• Decor should create an environment for the event. Make a detailed plan of all decor needs/wants.

• Your plan for decorating should be in accordance with the rules of the venue and within the limits of the theme (if you have one).

• Work with other committees where decor will overlap (i.e. food, entertainment, auction tables, invitations, etc…)

• Purchasing decor, set-up and breakdown of decor

• Reimbursement/purchase orders for decorations – …

Interior Design Trends For Your Home

People love to decorate their house with latest interior design trends. Everyone likes it when people compliment them on the interiors of their house. The more difficult thing then designing the interiors of the house is to design it a way that society can easily embrace. To keep up with the latest trends, people read about it in magazines, over the internet, consult design specialists etc. We hereby try to make it a little bit simpler for all those people who want to know what the latest interior design trends are.

A good thing about the trends in interior home designing is that they don’t change so quickly like trends in other industries like fashion, movies etc. So if you have recently designed your house with latest interiors then you don’t need to worry about your designs being out of date any sooner. The latest trends are an amalgamation of traditional and modern interior designs. The use of natural materials and colors is aesthetically preferred these days. Hand craft items have also made a come back in interior designing trend. Earlier it was often used with traditional designs. Colorful textures and modern geometry along with use of glass or other see through objects in the interior designing is also catching up.

Greener and natural options have become the latest trend in almost every aspect of life. Following with this trend, natural materials have also made entry in interior designing. Natural wood like texture in furniture, green carpets are some of the examples how people try to join the feel of nature into their houses. The versatility of natural elements allows experimenting with various designs and incorporating a transitional style. The interiors of house with natural elements in it create a calm and cozy atmosphere. It also has the advantage of giving the house a cleaner look.

The handcrafts are effective to make a classy combination of traditional and modern design. Handcrafts have made their way back into the interior designing industry for several years. The handcrafts use the latest technology with the artistic craftsmanship. While using handicrafts in designing the interiors we should keep in mind not to overdo it. When coupled with vintage furniture and accessories the hand crafts look even classier.

Transparent and see through materials are widely being used in interior designing. The objects made of glass or other transparent materials have the advantage that they allow the natural light and don’t create and dark shades. Diaphanous curtains, glass windows, transparent furniture are some of the examples which we can use to incorporate this latest design trend. Much like the traditional design, the latest design trends also include using bold patterns and bright primary colors. The most important aspect of it is carefully choosing the colors and accessories in designing the house. Nowadays objects with smooth and soft edges are more preferred over straight lines. It can also be engaging and relaxing to use large geometric patterns in the house.…

55 Years Old – Don’t Buy A House

If you have owned a house and paid off the mortgage over the years you know the first 10 years is almost all interest payments with very little equity.

There is nothing wrong with buying a house as long as you can qualify. That means a good down payment and a steady job. None of that no-down-payment nonsense. The buyer must be serious about making those monthly mortgage payments and have a good job. Banks are checking these days.

The financial community in the recent past has been required to make mortgages for those who did not qualify with no down payments and had no serious intention of paying if it became economically uncomfortable. It is too easy to walk away.

The true cost of home ownership is not just the monthly mortgage payment. In a new house all the appliances, plumbing, roof, pool equipment, window frames, etc., etc., everything has an estimated life expectancy after which they need to be replaced.

Buying an older home means all of the above will occur sooner. Replace or repair can be expensive.

The true cost of keeping the house is the mortgage payment plus upkeep. Oh and let’s not forget taxes. Then there is a little thing called insurance that is required by the mortgage holder.

The industry calls it PITI = principle, interest, taxes and insurance. Depending upon the length of time of the mortgage and whatever your down payment was it normally comes out 10% annually of the selling price divided by 12 or 1% of the selling price each month.

If the house cost $200,000 that figures about or close to $2,000 per month.

If you are 55 years old do you want to take on that obligation? Wouldn’t it be smarter to rent? If the same quality home can be rented for $1,200 per month the renter could save the difference of $800 each month and in 10 years at retirement have $96,000 plus interest. I can guarantee he would not have that in home equity if he bought the house when he was 55.

Furthermore renters pay much less for rental insurance and have the ability to move to a new location any time. Renters do not have to put on a new roof or replace an old hot water heater. No major upkeep out of pocket expense.

How about a 6 month rental in Canada for the Summer and 6 months in Florida, Mexico or Dominican Republic for the Winter? The only extra would be travel expenses.

With so many rentals available the foreclosure prices are not yet a great buy. If a person wishes to buy there are yet about 4,000,000 more distressed properties to hit the market in the next 2 years. Prices will be even lower than today.

Do the numbers before you buy.…

Classic TV Commercials – Diverse and Daring Advertising

The 1950s were arguably the golden age of television and many people of a certain age look back fondly at some of the shows of the time – "The Lone Ranger", "I Love Lucy" and "Gunsmoke". These shows were in black and white and were watched on a set that got its signal from a huge antenna on the roof, but they were loved just the same.

Almost as compelling as the TV shows themselves, there were some of the commercials of the time. TV was still a novelty during the 1950s and companies were angry to cash in on the new craze. Particularly popular commercials were for cigarettes, cars and state of the art kitchen appliances. And the average length of TV advertisements was around a minute – compared to the 30 seconds or less today.

Beer was also one of the products widely advertised on TV during the 1950s. At first, it was only late at night and never on a Sunday, so as not to offend anyone. During the early part of the decade, Blatz Beer became one of the beer industry's biggest advertisers, partly due to the company's sponsorship of the popular "Amos 'n' Andy" show.

One of the most instantly recognizable characters in television advertising at the time was Mabel. Mabel was a chirpy blond waitress who appeared on screen with a tray of Carling Black Label beer. Almost every Carling commercial featured the phrase that became famous – "Hey, Mabel, Black Label!"

Cigarette advertisements were commonplace during the 1950s – a big change from television today. Some of the largest tobacco manufacturers of the time spent a lot of money trying to convince us that smoking was sophisticated and fun, including Lucky Strike, Tareyton and Winston.

One famous Lucky Strike ad featured a clever combination of cartoon and live action, featuring the singer Gisele McKenzie. Tareytown had an ad that featured what appeared to be two children dancing around a huge pack of cigarettes. And who can possibly forget the Fontane Sisters singing the praises of Chesterfield cigarettes?

Car manufacturers went to great lengths to advertise the latest models on television during the 1950s despite the loss of aesthetic effect on a black and white screen. The Ford Edsel was advertised at great length as the most beautiful convertible in the world, complete with such wonderful and innovative features as "teletouch" driving and air suspension.

It was not all just cars, beer and tobacco. Some healthy products were advertised as well. One of the most well known ads of the era was for Pepsodent toothpaste. The TV ad featured a cute cartoon couple kissing after having brushed their teeth, and the catchy and unforgivable slogan – "You'll wonder where the yellow went, when you brush your teeth with Pepsodent!"

TV advertisements for kitchen appliances pointed out features that we now take for granted. A General Electric ad from the time for a new refrigerator consulted of a proud couple explaining the features of their …

Signs You May Need an AC Repair Service

Hiring a professional for AC repair service can be expensive but if you do general maintenance on your AC unit, you can reduce the AC repair service calls. One of the most effective and simplest ways to keep your AC running efficiently is to change the filter at least once a month. When a filter is clogged or dirty it will make your air conditioner work much harder. Buying new filters are easy on your budget, will help to extend the life of your air conditioner, and help to lower your utility bill. You should also make sure that the fins and AC coils on the outside of the unit are clear of obstruction and clean. Sometimes debris such as leaves accumulate around the AC unit so your unit will have to work harder to function. To clean it just use a broom and a regular garden hose but do not use a pressure washer. It could harm the system with the strong spray.

Even if you do regular maintenance on your air conditioner unit, there still may be times that you will need to call an AC repair service company. Here are some signs to look and listen for that might indicate the need for service.

• If it does not work at all, look to see if the thermostat is put on the “cool” position. Make sure that the cooling temperature is not higher than the home or room temperature. If those two things are okay then it could be a breaker has not tripped. After checking all of these and your AC unit is still not running you should call an AC repair service.

• If you can hear it operating but has no or little cool air coming from the vents and the thermostat is at a practical temperature there could be a problem inside the unit.

• Most air conditioners make some noise that seems like a normal part of the environment but if it starts to make strange unusual noises you should call the repair service

• If you start to notice strange smells coming from the AC unit, it could be an indication that there is mold, mildew, or dirt inside the unit. The contaminated air that AC is putting out will circulate through the house and could cause health problems. This problem should be addressed as soon as possible.

• Air conditioners normally cycle off and on to retain a steady temperature throughout the home. If the temperature outside is not warmer than usual and it starts to turn off and on more frequently than it usually does this could indicate that there is a problem with the AC unit.

• You notice water is leaking around or in the unit…

Kitchen Design Ideas

Kitchens have so many design options that they are literally never ending. Kitchen design ideas include features such as cabinetry, tiles, counter tops, appliances, hardware and fixtures. Each feature on its own has a multitude of design options and the possible combinations are endless. Two identical kitchens with only one different feature can look like very different kitchens when finished. Because of the vast number of design options, thoroughly research what products are available on the market and get a fairly good idea what it is you are looking for.

The main feature in any kitchen is the cabinetry. It is more often than not the first thing that people notice in a kitchen. The layout of the cabinetry is unique to each kitchen. Measure the size of your kitchen and determine the types of cabinets and where you would like them placed. If you have a solid wall with no windows, doors or appliances opt for floor to ceiling cabinets full of drawers for storage. Include a broom or cleaning closet in these cupboards. Glass fronts in corner cabinets are a popular design feature. Cabinets have a wide variety of door styles. There are recessed, flat paneled and raised cabinet doors. Each of these options comes with several design choices. Once you have picked the design of your cabinets you need to decide on the stain that suits your kitchen space. Opt for lighter colored stains for smaller kitchens to keep them feeling open and spacious.

Counter tops are also an important feature in a kitchen. They too are highly visible. Counter tops should be chosen for durability as well as looks. Granite counter tops are the most popular choice today. You may also choose from engineered stone, ceramic tile, laminates, wood and stainless steel. The material and colour of your counter tops should compliment your cabinetry, backslash and tiles. If your kitchen is a large room but does not have a lot of counter space you might want to consider adding an island for additional space. Not only does an island adds counter space but also storage space.

Flooring is an integral kitchen feature. Most kitchens are done with ceramic tile flooring but wood floors and laminates are growing in popularity. Many kitchens have tiled backslashes. Be sure that the tiles used in your backslash compliment the flooring. Besides the type of flooring you use, you must also pick a color of tile, wood or laminate as well as texture. Quite often a kitchen with light coloured cabinetry will look best with a slightly darker floor and vice-versa. Contrast between the cabinetry and the flooring, no matter how small, creates the illusion of depth.

The kitchen design ideas listed above are just the tip of the iceberg. We haven’t even touched on cabinet hardware, lighting fixtures, sinks and taps, paint colors or appliances. Matching appliances are ideal in any kitchen. Stainless steel appliances are a favorite because they match just about any kitchen design. Families with small children …

Nursing Home Alert – Big-Time Alert Of Diapers And Nursing Homes

This is an article that everyone needs to read. The facts are these, that sometimes a nursing home will actually teach and train a new resident or patient to be incontinent. How does this happen? How can something like this happen in this day and age? I will type here how this happens with an example of a forty-five year old female patient who entered a nursing home for short term care for therapy.

Here is the story:

At the hospital, the patient was not incontinent, never had accidents and was able to sleep and live without wearing diapers, just like in the regular world. Then the hospital transferred the patient into a good nursing home so that she could get short-term therapy for an injury to her left leg. She would need the therapy, physical therapy in order to learn to walk again. She now had the use of only one leg.

Immediately when she got to the nursing home, the nurse, who would be caring for her, asked if she wanted to wear a diaper. The patient hesitated answering because she thought that question was odd. After all, she did not need a diaper, nor did she want to wear a diaper. The nurse proceeded to say things like, well, in case you have an accident. The patient was basically, politely talked into wearing a diaper while at the nursing home, even though it was against her better judgment to begin wearing diapers at her age since she did not need diapers.

As in all nursing homes and hospitals, when patients are wearing diapers, they are told to go in their diapers. After all, that is what a diaper is for, correct? So this patient, at times, would just go in the diapers, using herself to have a bowel movement, since she was wearing the diaper. What it amounted to was that it was easier to dump in the diaper than it was to get a nurse to come to help her out of bed, then help her to the bathroom. The patient became increasingly afraid of falling and was made o think that diaper would stop falls and the diaper would also stop the patient from calling the nurse to help her to the bathroom. After all, make the nurse happy because she is the one who will be around most, for emergencies and all.

But from the beginning with this particular nurse who talked the patient into wearing a diaper, the patient and probably many other patients were put in diapers for the convenience of the nursing home, not for the convenience of patients. The patient did in her diaper one day and the nurse became a little upset about what happened, and then the nurse convinced the patient that she had an accident. When indeed, the patient had no accident, but instead the patient dumped in the diaper BECAUSE she was wearing a diaper and because when the patients rang for help, they had to …
